Created at the former Quinta do Bom Sucesso, the garden combines Madeiran endemic flora with tropical, subtropical and ornamental collections. Its terraces allow comparison of species and an understanding of Funchal’s amphitheatre climate.
Plan your visit
The steep grounds require time, water and comfortable footwear. Check public transport and cable-car connections rather than assuming every access is operating. The estate belonged to the Reid family before the Regional Government created the garden, fulfilling a long-standing ambition to study and display Madeira’s exceptional plant diversity.
The Botanical Garden occupies steep terrain away from Monte’s principal attractions. Collections, viewpoints and paths require time and suitable footwear; verify transport connections and never assume the cable-car segment is operating.
The garden opened in 1960 and occupies terraces overlooking Funchal from the former Quinta do Bom Sucesso.
