Montemor-o-Novo: An official EN2 stop combining the extensive hilltop castle, ruined churches, the historic town and the separately managed Escoural Cave.

Montemor-o-Novo is dominated by an extensive fortified area, where walls, towers, old churches and the Convento da Saudação still remain. The climb reveals the relationship between the current city and the medieval hill, but there is uneven ground, little shade and exposure to heat. The Escoural Cave belongs to the municipality and has limited and distant access; should never be promised without an official appointment. A visit to the castle deserves its own time. The great crossing of the Portuguese interior, with around 739 km between Trás-os-Montes and the Algarve.
