Understand the place

The bastioned stronghold, built close to the Spanish border, preserves its starry layout, moats, ravelins, double doors and underground military spaces.

What to watch out for

Walk along the circuit of the walls and enter through the Portas de São Francisco to understand the succession of defenses. The casemates, the riding arena and the ruins of the castle recall the military function of the town and the explosion of 1810, during the French Invasions.

Prepare the passage

Take time to explore the city center on foot, respect homes and properties and only use designated parking spaces. Confirm any changes to access, events and services on the official network and local entities.
