The official network of 12 villages
Almeida, Belmonte, Castelo Mendo, Castelo Novo, Castelo Rodrigo, Idanha-a-Velha, Linhares da Beira, Marialva, Monsanto, Piódão, Sortelha and Trancoso form the Historic Villages of Portugal network. The complete journey approaches 600 km with detours and needs at least seven days.
Days 1 and 2 — Trancoso to Almeida
Begin inside Trancoso's walls and continue to Marialva's ruined citadel. On day two, walk through Castelo Rodrigo before entering Almeida's star-shaped bastioned fortress. Use exterior parking and follow authorised routes on the walls.
Days 3 and 4 — Castelo Mendo to Linhares
Castelo Mendo and Sortelha require suitable shoes for steep, uneven streets. In Belmonte, connect the castle with Pedro Álvares Cabral and the town's Jewish heritage. Finish beneath the castle of Linhares da Beira, overlooking the Serra da Estrela landscape.
Day 5 — Piódão
Cross the Serra do Açor in daylight. The amphitheatre of schist houses, narrow lanes and white church deserve a full afternoon; parking and vehicle circulation are limited.
Days 6 and 7 — Gardunha and Idanha
Explore Castelo Novo's civic centre, climb through granite-built Monsanto without rushing and finish among the Roman, early Christian and medieval layers of Idanha-a-Velha.
