Opened in the early nineteenth century, Faro’s Neoclassical gateway incorporates an older medieval entrance and leads into the walled historic quarter of Vila Adentro.
What to look for
Francisco Xavier Fabri’s Neoclassical façade surrounds a far older passage through Faro’s wall. Inside, look for the horseshoe arch associated with the Islamic gateway and see how the monument joins the modern city to Vila Adentro. The present monumental composition was inaugurated in 1812.

Arco da Vila forms part of a working street rather than a separate museum. Pass without blocking residents or pedestrians and combine it with the walls, cathedral and streets of the former intramural city.
