A nature reserve, not simply a beach
Protection covers the land and a wide marine area, including geology, flora, seabirds, habitats and underwater heritage.
Berlenga Grande
The fishermen’s quarter, lighthouse and Fort of São João Baptista are separate landmarks. The fort is away from the harbour and reached over uneven ground and steps.
Controlled access
Entering the island’s land area requires a personal BerlengasPass, advance registration and a fee. Capacity is limited to 550 people at one time. Transport, access title and sea conditions are separate checks.
Conduct
Use authorised paths, avoid nesting areas, do not feed animals and take all waste away. Access is by authorised boat from Peniche and depends on sea state, capacity and nature-reserve rules. Follow marked paths, carry water and never assume caves, swimming or overnight stays are available under all conditions. The island environment is exposed, with little shade and limited services outside the main landing area.
