Levadas are channels created to transport water across the Madeiran relief. The associated maintenance paths now allow you to cross Laurissilva forest, valleys, tunnels and slopes, but they do not constitute a single route nor do they all have the same difficulty.
What to watch out for
Choose a concrete levada and notice the hydraulic engineering, the changes in vegetation and the sections where the exposure or tunnels alter the experience.
Prepare the visit
Consult the official list of open and closed routes. Bring waterproof, tunnel lighting and grippy footwear; never pass barriers or closure notices.
Fit it into the journey
Choose a levada that is compatible with your preparation and location on the island, avoiding adding distant routes just because they belong to the same hydraulic network.
