There is no single great route
This selection brings together different experiences: short walkways, mountain trails, pilgrimage paths and long multi-day routes. Distance alone does not measure difficulty; count on unevenness, flooring, exposure, heat and logistics.
North and Center
The Paiva Walkways follow the river in Arouca and require a ticket and transport planning. In Gerês and Serra da Estrela, use official routes, check the weather and avoid mountains with adverse conditions. The Caminhos de Santiago have their own variants and credentials.
Costa
The Rota Vicentina integrates the Historic Path and the Fishermen's Trail, with official rules and stages. In the Algarve, the Sete Vales Suspensos Trail passes close to cliffs: stay on the route and never go beyond fences.
Madeira and Azores
Levadas and paths in Madeira may be closed and some require reservationsva or fee. In the Azores, rain, mud and wind quickly change conditions. Always consult official regional portals.
Walkway does not mean accessible
Stairs, inclines and extensions can be demanding. Check actual accessibility, recommended direction, return transport, ticket and works. Don't assume that wood structures eliminate natural risk.
Essential preparation
Choose a suitable route, inform someone, take water, sun protection, your own clothes and shoes. Download the official route, but follow local signs. In case of fire, storm, strong wind or closure, postpone.
