Framing
The Serra de São Mamede rises in Alto Alentejo and creates cooler, wetter conditions than the surrounding plains. Forests, outcrops, streams and towns such as Marvão and Castelo de Vide make up a border landscape.
What to watch out for
Connect the high-altitude viewpoints with valleys, forest areas and historic centers, choosing official routes appropriate to the season.
Prepare the visit
Check the risk of fire, hunting, wind and condition of the trails. Some roads are narrow and mobile coverage can be spotty.
Fit it into the journey
Marvão, Castelo de Vide and Portalegre offer additional entrances to the mountains; distribute urban heritage and walk through different moments.
