Framing
The natural park protects the core of the Estremenho Limestone Massif, where water infiltrates instead of forming a continuous surface network. Caves, sinkholes, lapiás, poljes, dry stone walls and fenced oak groves reveal a landscape shaped by limestone.
What to watch out for
Choose between visitable caves, Fórnea, Salinas de Rio Maior, dinosaur footprints and signposted routes, avoiding trying to condense the entire park in a quick passage.
Prepare the visit
Confirm schedules and rules for each center. There are cavities not prepared for visits, active quarries and exposed trails; Never enter unauthorized caves or caves.
Fit it into the journey
Alcobaça, Porto de Mós, Rio Maior and Ourém are possible bases, but each one reveals a different aspect of the limestone massif and its accesses.
