A rewarding road-route stop for Port wine lodges, the Douro riverfront and the EN222 starting point.

Vila Nova de Gaia

Vila Nova de Gaia occupies the south bank of the Douro opposite the historic center of Porto. The pier, the Serra do Pilar Monastery and the cellars help to understand the urban landscape and the history of Port wine. The EN222 starts in the municipality, but some initial sections have been regionalized; on a full trip you must confirm the current route and not confuse the historic road with the expressways. From Vila Nova de Gaia to Almendra, a long road whose most celebrated section follows vineyards and the river in the Douro.
